When we visit the dental office, all personnel wear exam gloves for procedures.  Also when
we have blood drawn for tests, we see that the technician also wears exam gloves. In the surgery room or delivery room, the doctors and nurses have to wear gloves. Even caregivers who enter a patient's room in a hospital or nursing facility are provided with gloves. They are barriers to cross-contamination between the patient and medical/dental personnel.

Food handlers wear gloves so as not to transfer their germs onto the food that they touch. I personally put on disposable gloves to prepare chicken in my kitchen. I consider it a two-way barrier since chicken is notorious for harboring salmonella.

Detectives who investigate crime scenes, wear gloves for a different purpose. They do not want to contaminate the area with their own fingerprints.

Gloves are handy for painting projects, messy crafts, or cleaning bathrooms and other germy places.
